Servant Leadership Applies to Everyone

I had dinner tonight with Kevin O’Malley. He has an awesome track record for working with interns. We talked about his intern journey as well as our own at SalesLoft.

Based on the conversation and our recent experiences, here are some thoughts on how to have rewarding & mutually beneficial relationships with interns:

  1. You have to want interns. Not ‘need’ them.
  2. You have to recognize the value you can provide to them
  3. Your perspective must be ‘how can you serve them’, as opposed to ‘how can they serve you.’

In fact, it reminds me of this famous presidential quote:

I’ve learned the role of a leader is to serve, not the other way around.
