Outbound Marketing is Getting Smoked

I sat down with marketing superstars Kevin Wallace & Heath Hyneman yesterday. We were talking strategy around content marketing ideas and the guys turned me on to some presentations from MozCon, the conference run by SEOMoz.

As I dug through the Powerpoint’s, I found this image and immediately smiled. This simple picture represents the future of marketing:

5-10 years ago all this was a blip on the radar screen for the marketing department, who was focused on advertising, direct mail, email blasts, & cold-calling.

Now marketing must meet the demands of our customers and our communities. No longer can it interrupt and disrupt their days. This means companies must always strive to be close to their customers, not just building products for them. But creating experiences and content/education that will help them to become better at their jobs and more fulfilled.

A simple image, but a massive shift in thinking.
